Q: Why do you write puppet scripts? What motivates you?
I do enjoy writing skits. The best skits are those that have been field tested and then rewritten. Like the velveteen rabbit, they get better with use. :) Rachel
Q: Tell us about your church or puppet organisation.
Vilott Baptist Church is a little country church, filled with very loving people. How blessed I am to have such a loving church family.
Q: How did you get started in puppets and what attracted you to this area?
When I was in High School I went to a Youth Confrence Meeting. One of the topics they discussed was the use of Puppets in Ministry. One of the print outs given was a basic puppet pattern. I saved it. About 10 years later I made the first one for my son... It wasn't long after that, we started a puppet ministry in our church. That pattern and design has changed alot since..
Q: Where does your inspiration come from to write puppet scripts?
Inspiration can come from a sermon, a need for specific material, a humorus line, an experience, just about anything...sometimes I read a bible story to see what surrounds this Bible story that we don't usually hear or see...Maybe even just looking at the same story from a different view.... but, always looking for how it applies... that is the main thing..and to present it so the kids realize it really did happen and these people were real folks.
Q: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in puppetry?
Get on the internet.. there is so much information there... Christ-pup is an E-Mail group and the folks there share information and you can ask them questions about anything puppetwise and there is always someone that has some information... Have fun and do it... Nothing ever gets started till it gets implemented and it never gets better till it gets started...
Q: Who are your favourite puppet characters and what do you like about them?
I love the muppets... I think my favoirte Kermit sceen is when he is talking about taking care of your teeth and he has teeth in his mouth and he is talking about eating carrots!!! LOL it is hilarious!! he is talking and acting like he has loose dentures in his mouth the whole time... LOL Seseme Street, Lambchops, muppet movies, all great stuff..
Q: What are the most important qualities in great puppet scripts?
That you reach your objective. If you are entertaining, then that it captivate your audience. If you are teaching, that the lesson does not get lost in the entertainment. A script can be great but it is the performance that makes the lines "pop" I can write the lines, but you can't hear the "he was standing there ....WAITING for him." delivery.
Q: What would you do if you were a puppet?
I would want to be real......really alive, true to my character, and interacting with other real puppets and real kids and real folks. I would want people to know I have real experiences.. like eating pizza or camping out or telling jokes... Yep, I would want to be real!
