Q: Why do you write puppet scripts? What motivates you?
I write and perform the puppet scripts for Children's Church at our church.
Q: Tell us about your church or puppet organisation.
We use the puppet ministry once a month to aid in teaching Bible stories during Children's Church. My husband and I started puppets during the winter of 2005. The children really are very attentive during the skits and sometimes ask clever questions afterward. We can tell that God is doing a mighty work in the hearts and minds of the children.
Q: How did you get started in puppets and what attracted you to this area?
We decided that we needed to be much more involved in our church. Children's Church seemed like an easy area to start. Since I was involved a number of years ago in a puppet ministry at another church and our church didn't have a puppet ministry, we realized there was a need to serve the children in this way.
Q: Where does your inspiration come from to write puppet scripts?
We have been fortunate to find puppet scripts a few times on line that fit the scripture that was being taught. Sometimes on line scripts only provide concepts for the skit.
Q: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in puppetry?
Pray very hard that God would bless your ministry. Pray that He would use your talents to open the hearts and minds of the children, that they might understand His teaching. Use puppets that are easy to manipulate. Practice the script frequently and use the script during performance. Be comfortable during your performance.
Q: Who are your favourite puppet characters and what do you like about them?
We have four puppets that mimic little girls and boys. I think the most successful skits were with them. We have other full bodied puppets, but I think the children enjoy these the most.
Q: What are the most important qualities in great puppet scripts?
Glorify Jesus in the script. Demonstrate Christian attributes. Be humorous and touch on other emotions. Be willing to let the audience respond.
Q: What would you do if you were a puppet?
Laugh, snicker, cry, weep, console or do any other human characteristic. Although, personally I don't have the puppets pray.
